Claude Lorrain (1604–1682), generally known today as Claude, was a noteworthy draftsman and painter of landscapes in the 17th century.
In a Gallery Talk entitled “Claude Lorrain—The Painter as Draftsman: Drawings from the British Museum,” members of the National Gallery's education division will discuss Claude’s work on display in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
Both J. Russell Sale, gallery lecturer and author of “Italian Paintings of the Fifteenth Century,” and Philip Leonard, gallery lecturer, will lead the Gallery Talk. The discussion begins at 12:00pm and should last for about 60 minutes. Meet in the West Building Rotunda.
The June 17th Gallery Talk coincides with an exhibition of Claude’s drawings, etchings, and paintings on display at the National Gallery now through August 12, 2007. The works are on loan from the British museum in the first exhibition in the U.S. devoted solely to Claude since 1982. The exhibit focuses on the importance of strong drafting skills to the success and superior quality of Claude’s landscapes.
